This is a glossary explaining terms used in the archive of Stat Crew data for the 2017-18 Roanoke College men's basketball season. Please send corrections or comments to improve the site to minton@roanoke.edu.

Shot charts come from live data collection done by Stat Crew members at home games. Information for player stats and lineup stats comes from the official play-by-play for each game, cleaned up to remove as many errors as possible.

Raw +/-, Adj +/-
For a given player/lineup, Raw +/- is the difference between RC points scored and RC points allowed during the time that the player/lineup is on the floor. Adj is "adjusted." The idea is that a raw +/- of 2 in a game the team wins by 40 is not impressive but it is good in a game the team loses by 10. We adjust for the final game score. As an example, suppose the team wins by 12, and for the 10 minutes a player is on the court the team scores 28 and allows 24. The player's raw +/- is 28 - 24 = 4. The adjusted plus/minus takes the 40-minute margin of 12, pro-rates it to a 10-minute margin of 3 and gives the player an adj+/- of 4 - 3 = 1. The +4 for the player is 1 point better than the team average of +3 every 10 minutes.

OffEff, DefEff
"Offensive Efficiency" equals points per possession scored, "Defensive Efficiency" equals points per possession allowed. The number of possessions is estimated directly from the play-by-play. Offensive rebounds do not count as a new possession. The stat is for the period that the player/lineup is on the floor.

True %
"True Shooting Percentage" measures points per shot with free throws factored in. For example, suppose a player/lineup makes 4 of 8 field goals, 2 of which are 3's and 4 of 4 free throws. With two 3's, the team made 10 points, equivalent to 5 field goals, on 8 shots. The free throws are the equivalent of making 2 out of 2 field goals. The true percentage is 7 out of 10, or 70%. This matches up much better with points per possession than regular field goal percentage does

Usage, P +/-
"Usage" is an NBA stat that shows who ends possessions. If a player takes 4 shots, makes 1 turnover, and gets 1 assist in 10 possessions, the usage is 6 out of 10 or 60%. Usage numbers are not "good" or "bad" but could be looked at as "appropriate" or "too large/too small" depending on the player. P+/- is "possession plus/minus" and equals offensive rebounds plus steals minus turnovers. Larger is better!

TFG%, TReb%
Measured while the player/lineup is on the floor. Team field goal percentage either shows both us and them or the difference between the two. Team rebound percentage is percent of defensive rebounds grabbed. Pure rebound totals depend on shooting percentages, what you really want is to control the defensive boards. Values for us and them may be shown, or the difference between the two. For these two stats, larger differences are better.

TT%, TFTR, PF%
Measured while the player/lineup is on the floor. Team turnover percentage is the percentage of possessions in which the offense commits a turnover. We want ours to be smaller, and the difference to be negative. TFTR is team free throw rate, the number of free throws per possession. Larger is better. PF% is the percentage of possessions the team commits a foul. Smaller is better.
