This is a glossary explaining terms used in the archive of Stat Crew data for Roanoke College men's and women's soccer seasons. Please send corrections or comments to improve the site to minton@roanoke.edu.

Shot charts, minutes played, and passing stats come from live data collection done by Stat Crew members at home games.

Aggressive passes, Safe passes
When Roanoke regains possession (by takeaway, bad pass by opponent, or winning 50/50 ball) we mark whether the first pass in the new possession is aggressive (bypassing some defenders, so usually forward) or safe (not bypassing any defenders, so usually sideways or backwards). The fraction of aggressive plays is a measure of whether the team is actively seeking a counterattack or trying to secure possession. Depending on the score and time, one may be more appropriate than the other.

Expected goals
This is a formula that estimates the probability of scoring a goal on a shot from a given distance, angle, and defensive pressure. The formula is based on data collected by Linnea Kremer from Roanoke College men's games in 2016. The total expected goals for games has proved to be surprisingly close to the actual score, with deviations often explained by good or bad shooting or goalkeeping. The best way to look at expected goals is as a measure of shot quality. For a player, "ExpG" is the sum of all expected goals for that player's shots. "RCEG" is the sum of all Roanoke shots with that player on the field. "OpEG" is the sum of all opponent's shots with that player on the field.

Shot Charts
Shot locations are recorded live and are not infinitely accurate. "X" marks shots that are off goal, "On" marks shots that are on goal (including shots that hit the post) and "G" marks the locations of goals.

Player Stats
"Tover" are turnovers (off the dribble typically) by that player. "Taway" are takeaways credited to that player, generally steals off the dribble or especially impressive interceptions of passes."TmP/min" and "TmPpct" are the team's passes per minute and passing percentage during the time that that player is on the field. Passes per minute is a measure of game control, considered by many to be better than time of possession in indicating the ability of the team to control the ball.

Team Stats
Measured while the player is in the game. "TPpm" is team passes per minute; red (hot) is well above team average, blue (cold) is well below team average. "TPp" is team passing percentage. "TLpm" is team long passes per minute, a measure of how aggressive the team is. "TShpg" is team shots per 90 minutes (per minute looked too small). Team totals for the game are listed below the table.

Lineups
The number of minutes played for a lineup are not usually large enough to draw conclusions, but the lineups are listed in the order of appearance in the game so it can show the progression of the game. Note that the last column is not expected goals for the opposition but NET expected goals (positive is good). You can look down this column to see if a lineup had a positive or negative production.
