For a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Athletic Training, the following units of work are required. Five and one-half core units (required of all majors in the department of Education, Health and Human Performance) must be taken. They include Health and Human Performance 201 200, 202 207, 221, 223 or equivalent, 301, 402 306, and 410 403.
For a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in health and human performance either 11 or 12 units of work are required within the department. The core courses are Health and Human Performance 201 200, 202 207, 221, 301, 402 306, and 410 403. Note that Health and Human Performance 160 is prerequisite for Health and Human Performance 202 207; Health and Human Performance 201 200 or permission is prerequisite to Health and Human Performance 302 and 404; Health and Human Performance 221 or permission is prerequisite for all courses above the Health and Human Performance 301 level (except for independent study courses); and Biology 101 and 230 are prerequisites for Health and Human Performance 402 306 and 410 403. All students must obtain certification in adult, infant and child CPR and standard first aid prior to their senior year. This course may be taken as an elective or through an external agency. Verification of external agency certification must be presented to the department chair. In addition to the core courses, students must complete either the Teacher Licensure program or the Exercise and Sports Studies program.

This program of study is required for students interested in being licensed to teach health and physical education. Other state licensure requirements are also required. (See Education section.)
The student desiring to teach health and physical education in elementary/secondary schools may secure credits to satisfy the requirements for licensure in Virginia and other states with which Virginia has reciprocity.
Exercise and Sports Studies Program
A student may choose to major in Health and Human Performance by completing the “Exercise and Sports Studies” program. In addition to the five core units for a Health and Human Performance major, students in this program must complete one of the following Exercise and Sports Studies emphasis options: Exercise and Sport Management, Exercise Science, Physical Activity and Aging, or Sports Communication.
