Major/Minor changes

BIOLOGY

BIOL 225 will be listed in the “Core Areas and Distributions” section of the Biology major as an elective in: D. Ecology and Evolution and for teacher licensure–Biology (6-12) “Ecology and Evolution” section as an additional elective option.

BIOCHEMISTRY/CHEMISTRY

The B.A. in Chemistry requires 9.5 units of chemistry, including:
CHEM 110 or 111, 112, 221, 222, 280(½), 331, 332, 350, and additional units chosen from chemistry courses numbered 250 or higher. MATH 121 and 122 and two units of physics with lab are pre-requisites for CHEM 331.

The B.S. in Chemistry requires 12.5 units in chemistry, including:
CHEM 110 or 111, 112, 221, 222, 260, 280(½), 331, 332, 341, 350, 1 unit of research at the 400-level, 1 unit of advanced elective chosen from CHEM 342, 420, 430, 460, or 499, and 1 additional unit chosen from chemistry courses numbered 250 or higher. MATH 121 and 122 and two units of physics with lab are pre-requisites for CHEM 331. Chemistry majors who complete this B.S. program are certified by the American Chemical Society.

The B.S. in Biochemistry requires 12.5 units in Chemistry and Biology, including:
CHEM 110 or 111, 112, 221, 222, 280(½), 331, 341, 342, BIOL 120, 210, 315, and either 380 or 400, and

One of these two options:  A: one unit of research in either BIOL or CHEM culminating in a formal paper and oral defense, or B: one additional unit chosen from chemistry courses numbered 250 or higher. Math 121 and 122 and two units of physics with lab are pre-requisites for Chem 331.
Biochemistry majors may receive certification from the American Chemical Society by taking three additional chemistry courses. See the Chair of the Chemistry Department for details.

COMPUTER INFORMATION SYSTEMS

The major has been eliminated and no major declarations will be accepted after March 31, 2010.

CRIMINAL JUSTICE

POLI 301 (Public Administration) was required in the Political Science [Group B] category of the Criminal Justice major. The new requirement is: POLI 301 or POLI 201 (State and Local Government).

ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE

Major in Environmental Science: C. Chemistry – 3 units: CHEM 111, CHEM 112 and CHEM 270.

Minor in Environmental Science (6 units required):
BIOL 125, BIOL 120 or BIOL 205, CHEM 111 or PHYS 103, ENVI 200 and
2 units from among:
ENVI 307, 307, 310, 406 or 416 [only one unit of internship or independent study may be used]
BIOL 205, 300, 360; CHEM 270; ECON 287; POLI 251

HEALTH AND HUMAN PERFORMANCE

The major in Health and Human Performance has been dropped.  The major in Athletic Training continues.  Three new majors have been added:

For a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Sport Management the following units of work are required in the areas of Health and Human Performance (HHP), Business Administration (BUAD) and Economics (ECON). Required courses include HHP 200, 207, 221, 223 or equivalent, 225, 301, 315, 412, 418 or 405-407; BUAD 215, 233, 254, 364; ECON 120 OR 121. All students must obtain certification in adult, infant and child CPR and standard first aid prior to their senior year. This course may be taken at Roanoke College or through an external agency. Verification of external agency certification must be presented to the department chair.

For a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Health and Exercise Science the following units of work are required in the areas of Health and Human Performance (HHP) and Biology (BIOL). Required courses include HHP 200, 207, any two of the following: 203, 204, 205, or 206, 221, 223 or equivalent, 225, 301, 306, 315, 403, 411, 418 or 405-407; BIOL 230 and 260. All students must obtain certification in adult, infant and child CPR and standard first aid prior to their senior year. This course may be taken at Roanoke College or through an external agency. Verification of external agency certification must be presented to the department chair.

For a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Health and Physical Education the following units of work are required in the areas of Health and Human Performance (HHP) and Biology (BIOL). Required courses include BIOL 230; HHP 200, 203, 204, 205, 206, 207, 221, 223 or equivalent, 301, 302, 305, 306, 335, 403, 404, and 409. All students must obtain certification in adult, infant and child CPR and standard first aid prior to their senior year. This course may be taken at Roanoke College or through an external agency. Verification of external agency certification must be presented to the department chair.

This program of study is required for students interested in being licensed to teach health and physical education. Other state licensure requirements are also required. (See Education section.)

The student desiring to teach health and physical education in elementary/secondary schools may secure credits to satisfy the requirements for licensure in Virginia and other states with which Virginia has reciprocity.

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Group II (Western Perspectives): B (European Perspectives): add HIST 242: Modern Germany.

SOCIOLOGY

One INQ 260SO (Sociology INQ260s only) course can count as a lower level elective in the major and minor.11/09

ANTH 101, ANTH 212, ANTH 310, and ANTH 380 may count as electives in the Sociology major but only one 300-level ANTH course may be used to satisfy the upper level requirement.

THEATRE

Theater Arts courses will be changed from TART to THEA, effective AY 10-11.

THEOLOGY

Both the Theology major and minor names have been changed to Christian Studies.
