Ratings 11/10/07
A couple of times this week, I've used some classic phrases in class and had a roomful of students trying to figure out what I was saying. Language changes very rapidly these days. I was planning on starting off by saying that for several conferences it's down to brass tacks. But maybe brass tacks don't exist anymore. And that's an old expression even for me, so maybe I misunderstood it years ago, because it doesn't make that much sense. A student wrote me a paper once including his opinion that we live in a competitive "doggie-dog world". Well, I defiantly think that we should "definitely" use language correctly.
So, whether or not there are brass tacks present (I would suggest tacky asses, but Spurrier's not involved), some championships will be decided this weekend. There is, of course, Ohio State and Michigan, both coming off of losses. Clemson and Boston College play for the ACC Atlantic crown, to play the winner of next week's Virginia / Virginia Tech game. Harvard and Yale play for the Ivy League championship. West Virginia and Cincinnati are two of the three with reasonable shots at the Big East. Enjoy the games!
The following predictions are straight from the ratings, with 4 points added for home field.
Virginia Tech over Miami by 19 (could be ugly, unless the Canes actually show up this week)
Clemson over Boston College by 7 (in spite of consecutive losses, BC could salvage its season with a win)
West Virginia over Cincinnati by 2 (the Bearcats look for a second straight big win at home)
Oregon over Arizona by 19 (a rare chance to see the Ducks and Dennis Dixon on Thursday night)
Ohio State over Michigan by 4 (the Big House has not been especially kind to Meechigan this year)
Penn State over Michigan State by 3 (for the "Land Grant Trophy" and to tie JoePa with Bowden)
Georgia Southern over Colorado State by 3 (another Southern Conference road win in 1-A?)
Yale over Harvard by 12 (would complete a 10-0 season for Eli)
Lehigh over Lafayette by 5 (meeting #143 for the longest uninterrupted rivalry in the NCAA)
