Final Ratings 2000
Lucky BCS! Oklahoma wins, there's a unanimous champion, very little controversy except some who say that Miami or Washington would have given Oklahoma a better game. On the other hand, if FSU had won there would have been six teams at the top with one loss and innumerable arguments as to who should get a championship. Everybody's happy, Sports Illustrated uses a Case Closed headline. Except that I'm supposed to explain to you why my computer ranking has Oklahoma #3. It probably won't do much good to mention that the top 3 are separated by only 0.3 points, so it's basically a dead heat. It probably also won't help to mention that Florida State had an average point spread of +28.84 against opponents with an average rating of 45.72, whereas Oklahoma won by an average of 21.23 over teams with an average rating of 44.53. I think that in this case our human ideas of deciding who's #1 make more sense than the computer's. Oklahoma was 6-0 against teams the computer ranked in the top 20 and that's more than a good enough schedule and point differential for me.
I hope you enjoyed this year's By the Numbers. See you next year.
