Final Ratings 2001-02

Miami's clearly number 1, so just like last year the undefeated team wins it all. No problem, right? Except that just like last year we're all upset because the "right team" didn't play for the title. At this point, it seems "obvious" that Oregon would have been better competition than Nebraska, so everyone is proposing to change the BCS again to something that would have produced Oregon as the challenger. Here's one idea: the old bowl set-up was flawed because we couldn't always get #1 versus #2, either because of conference champs being committed to different bowls or because the bowls chose TV ratings (i.e., Notre Dame) over quality teams. So why not just let the polls decide? Scrap everything in the BCS except the two polls, with maybe the computer averages as a tie-breaker. By the way, my computer still doesn't like Oregon that much. Should Florida be #2? The Vegas folks said that Florida would have had the shortest odds as Rose Bowl fodder for Miami.

The Big East (surprise!) had the best conference bowl record at 4-1. The MAC was 2-0, the ACC 4-2 and the SEC 5-3. The Big 10 struggled at 2-4, the Big 12 was 3-5 and the Pac 10 2-3. This caused a lot of shuffling of the rankings of those who played and those who didn't play bowl games.
